How to choose a coat

Tell us what you need and we'll search the stores themselves, right now.

Length

Short stops at the waist, hip-length a little below it, knee-length at the knee, and long goes below it. A coat that reaches the knee or lower almost always covers a midi dress or skirt. A short coat is easier for driving and sitting.

Type, by weather

A trench suits spring, autumn and days when it's only slightly cold. A wool coat suits a cold winter. A puffer or parka suits cold and rain, as long as it's water resistant.

"Water-repellent" isn't "waterproof"

A water-repellent coat holds off light rain for a short while. A waterproof one keeps you dry through a long downpour. If you need the second, look for it in the description.

Room for layers

If you plan to wear a sweater underneath, check that the cut is roomy enough and the sleeves aren't too short. For plus-size coats too, compare the chest and sleeve measurements with the store's chart.

Questions and answers

Which coat length covers a dress or skirt?

A coat that reaches the knee or lower almost always covers a midi dress or skirt. You can filter by length in the results.

What is a trench coat?

A long, light coat, usually belted and double-breasted, made of cotton or a water-repellent fabric.

How do I know a coat is warm enough?

Stores don't always say. Look in the description for the fabric, such as wool or down, and for a lining.
